When you open your utility bills and compare them to last year are they higher or lower? Most of us look and see that we are paying more then last year. What can we do to make a difference? Can we call the utility companies and demand that they lower their prices? We could but how effective would that be? Not very. If you can't change the prices from the utilities you have to change how much you consume.

There are two ways to reduce consumption, you can become more efficient or you can go without. Going without may be effective most of the time it normally isn't an option, so becoming more efficient is our only choice.

Make your home as energy efficient as possible. For example ask yourself how efficient are your furnace and windows? A high efficiency furnace and windows can make a huge difference in your monthly heating costs. The author replaced his 80% efficient furnace with a 90% high efficient furnace and the his old single pane windows with vinyl replacement windows with Low-E glass and and his gas bill went down over 20% from the previous year including the rate hike from the utility company.
